A Hike to the Far Side of the Falls

Hullo! Today we are going on another epic adventure. No geocaching though... there weren't any on the trails we had planned... Let's go

Oh wow... those are some seriously fuzzy pussy willows... sooo nice.

See how big they are... we picked a few to take home...

Along the way we came across some projects by the local university forestry program... This log had a question on it...

"How old are these trees?"

They are pretty darn big trees, that's for sure!!

But let's start at the centre... Each year has two rings... a wider, lighter coloured ring from early in the growing season and then a narrower, darker ring at the end of the growing season. At the start, when the tree was young, you can see that the rings are quite wide... its was growing fast!

But then, here at the outer edges, you can see that the rings are much narrower, growing much more slowly... but the results of our tree analysis are...

This tree was 75-80 years old... things grow fast out here on the West Coast... fast and big!

Alright... we are going down this trail here... searching for the creek...

This slope is quite steep in spots and the trail zig-zags quite a bit...

Oh, there's the creek!!

Ummm... is that the bridge?? Ooohhh... it looks like it's been seriously demolished by high waters or downed trees or... something...

We could scootch along here...

And then jump onto here... but... I'm not sure what they human is going to do!

Orrrr... we could just use the very fancy newish bridge!!!

Well, you coulda pointed that out to us earlier! Hmph...

You ever notice how humans like to build the suspense sometimes...

Right then, let us trot across this very skookum bridge...  (that is Chinook Jargon for... "strong")...

And now we scamper on a few trails with interesting names... like Europa and...

Ahhhh--hhahhahahahah!!! Drunken Logger!!?? That was the super steep, snakey trail we came down on... well, that makes sense...

Onwards... we are still searching for the Falls!

To Be Continued
