Fisgard Lighthouse on a Spit of a Rock

Righto!! We are tootling off the lighthouse Along the way we passed what looks like an old boathouse but is really camouflage for an old searchlight emplacement!!

Sneaky!!! I wonder if it would have fooled the enemy though?

And on the ground here, we have a strip of harbour defences... this "chain mail" could be pulled across the mouth of the harbour to prevent submarines from sneaking in...

It would have been held up by buoys like these...

I wonder how many times it got pulled up?

Alrighty... so back there... that's the main fortress... all hidden behind the rock outcropping...

And there's the lighthouse... almost there!

Almost...

It was the first permanent lighthouse on Canada's pacific coast, built in 1859-1860. The light and the first lightkeeper came from England!

It's gorgeous here on a sunny day but back then... stuck on this little dinky spit of a rock... meh... not the life for this little bear!

Let's go inside!

Ooohhh... fancy staircase but it's closed to visitors... sigh.

Would be nice to see what's up there...

The rest of the place looked a bit like a church... and I don't think they had baseboard heaters in 1860!

And that's our trip to Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse! It was beary educational and best of all it was free this year!!

Oooh... wait... one more thing... I came across this on Fort Rodd Hill's Facebook page...

They had a Teddy Bear Picnic for all of their lost stuffies!!! Love it!!!

Halloween Costumes for a Fox and a Bear

Hullo!!! Do you remember last Halloween? Little Fox was here for a visit and we came up with a seriously good paired costume idea and then... Rose had a surprise costume for Sandy so we had to readjust... which means... we saved our costumes for THIS year!

We have a clue last year too...

Seeeee....

We are both beary proud of these costumes!

It took a lot of work and stuffy patience... Ready???

Ta-dahhhh!!! We are Ninja Stuffies!!

Complete with throwing knives and swords...

Eh?? What do you think?

We area fearsome warriors... beware!

Ready to do whatever Ninja warriors are called to do...

"Yes!!!"

"Errr... what are Ninja warriors called do do???"

I have no idea... just look fearesome!

Sharp blades for throwing at anyone trying to pilfer our pumpkins (like the local deer).

"Oh that sounds fearsome, for sure..."

Shhh... we are fearsome.

OMG... enough photos already!!!!

"Yes... it's hot and itchy under here!"

Just one more??? You said that several photos ago!!

"That's it human... I am fixing my fearsome stare on you..."

"And sandy has one too..."

Seee.... fearsome...

"Oh thank god! IT is sooo hot in there!"

I know, but it was good!! I had planned this costume months ago and it's great that we could include you in it!

"Yes... ugh... erk... great fun... but I'm stuck..."

So you are... let's get you out of that!!

And that's our entry for the Jerry & Ben's 2024 Halloween Costume Contest!

A National Historic Site Visit - Fort Rodd Hill - Part 3

Alrighty... onwards with our tour of Fort Rodd Hill!!

Did you know they have fancy tents set up over there... and that apparently, you can rent them out and stay overnight!!

I would do that in a heartbeat! It looks a bit rustic but it might be fun!

Alright.... we are on to see the last bit of the fort.

Through the entrance gate...

Apparently Sir Arthur William Currie trained here as a militiaman before going to the First World War. He later took control of the entire Canadian Corps over there... the first and only Canadian to do so (think the Brits always do it)...

Alright, what's in here.

Ooh, a bunk house type thing...

And an area closed due to nesting barn swallows... seriously...

This place is going to the birds!!! (you just knew that was going to happen, didn't you...?)

Looks like there used to be one of those elevator guns there....

It's an amazing view up here...

That's the Fisgard Lighthouse... we'll go there in the next post. It used to be on an island but they built a causeway to it... easier for tourists to manage.

It guards the entrance to Esquimault Harbour which is where the military have shipyards and stuff.

Right then, where to next??

Down here, protected from any enemy gunfire is the engine room for the searchlights... with big fuel tanks... don't want those to get exploded!

Those are pretty big searchlights!

And I imagine the engines would have been beary noisy...

Before we head down to the lighthouse... we have one more stop...

This was the code-breaking room under the main fortress! During the Second World War I think...

That would have been a cool job.

There's also another bunk room...

I wonder how they kept all their stuff dry... it would have rained buckets here in the winter.

Ah well... is that brass thing a spittoon????
