Mushrooms for Gramma

Hello... today we are out on the mountain, hunting for chanterelle mushrooms for Gramma. First we found some coral mushrooms... they aren't what we are looking for...

Then we found an old stump covered with little yellow mushrooms but those aren't them either...

This one looked promising but it is a scaly chanterelle which is of dubious edibility...

See the scales on it... and it has a big hollow in it... not what we want.

Oh.. .wait... look at that one beneath the log... I think that looks promising! Knife please...

Seriously?? That is the tiniest pocket knife in history but it was all Gramma had on hand.

See the ridges on the underside... that is typical of chanterelles...

It is a bit crumpled from being under the log but it is good!

We kept hunting and found this one...

And it has nice ridges underneath.

Compare with this one which has gills... not what we want!

And another one...

They are hiding a bit...

But these are not good...

See... gills on the bottom...

This one is a bit different - it is a type of bolete mushroom - we took it too...

It has a spongy bottom for the cap...

There are some more chanterelles!

Ben found one really hiding under the moss...

And Jerry found one too...

It shows the ridges (not gills) beautifully...

 Soooo nice...

Ad more... we got quite a haul!

Ben is already thinking of things he could do with them in the kitchen...

We had a little rests at the viewpoint...

And all of a sudden realised... Ben had lost the badge off his bag!

Noooo!!!!

We have to go back and find it...

So we looked through the photos on Mama's phone... there we are at the start, in front of the stump... and Ben has his badge...

And there it is at the scaly chanterelle...

But it's gone at the squished chanterelle... alright... I know exactly where that is (more or less)...

We hiked back to the scaly chanterelle and all heaved a big sigh of relief!

Whew... found it! I have the same badge so I was going to give Ben mine if we didn't find it...

Yay!!!!

We went home and showed Gramma our haul...

She was beary impressed...

Cause we did get quite a few!

Gramma looks happy!

  1. That's LOADS of mushrooms!!!! I'm not sure I'd be any good at collecting them as I can't tell the difference between gills and wrinkles......

  2. Some good detective work to find Ben's badge! I am fascinated by your mushroom hunting skills...my human and I would probably poison ourselves inadvertently if we tried to do that. Did Gramma teach you?

    1. A successful Sherlock Sandy case! Yup, Gramma taught me... but we only really go for a dozen or so choice mushrooms - most of which are super easy to identify if you know what you're doing.

  3. Phew! Glad you found the button. I hate losing things.. except for pants which I don't mind losing.
