Sherlock Sandy and the Case of the Cookie Extortionist

Hello again... after having been distracted by the Hot Chocolate Festival, Sherlock Sandy (that's me) is ready to re-examine the Case of the Cookie Extortionist. If you remember, Bear Ben received a threatening note telling him to Hand Over His Cookies Or Else!

Since that time, Ben Watson has sent some fresh evidence my way. We now know that the threatening note was plastered to the fridge at a height of 2 feet above the ground. Given that Little Bears are only 9 inches tall, this is naturally quite suspicious. Ben Watson used some cinnamon to dust for prints and... found this print (blown up big for your viewing pleasure).

Clearly this is NOT a stuffy paw print... no, it is not... it is a human print!

Ben Watson (brilliant bear that he is) also set up a hidden camera. He baked a bunch of cookies, put them out in a tempting location and... voila... caught in the act!! A human hand grabbing a whole bunch of cookies... note that it is a left hand as well...

Sooo... Ben Watson... Sherlock Sandy would like to know... which human in your household is left-handed and... is this person susceptible to bribery? Because... although it may look as if the human is the culprit... they are notoriously slow-minded and me thinks a masterful bear may be behind the cookie extortion. After all... it would be a stroke of genius for a bear to bribe a human into stealing cookies... don't you think? Ben Watson... I think if you were to find the human belonging to that hand... and fix the person under your steely little bear gaze... we might get a break in the case!

    Dear Sherlock Sandy,

Ben Watson here, and me happee to write to you. Me prezent klues, my inveztigashion, and your deductive reazons to human seKretaries in the houze. Me furst thought Jerry posted cookee message to me, bearcause Jerry love cookees. But I have finger print and photo of seKretary steeling cookees, and that can't be Jerry, so one seKretary took deep sigh and confessed to posteeng the message--you were right Sherlock Sandy!

Me ask why seKretary post message! Sekretary feel bad, but sayz that when no cookees in the house, both bears and humans get beary grumpy and life iz sad! Sekretary said that the bearthday gift of new blue spatoolah was big hint. Me think about that for some time. It'z beary important to make your friendz and houze mates happee. So me conklude that yes, I need to make cookees more often, then everybody happee! So, me not too upset about message...*whispers* and me going to pretend to be a little upset so that I get more baking suppliez and cookeeng toolz! (hehe).

Thank you Sherlock Sandy for solveeng the Case of the Cookie Extortionist!!! Me send a thank you geeft to you in mail.

    Ben Watson

    1. Me thinks your humans are getting antsy with all of the cold weather you have been having. (and not making really good decisions) I prescribe a trip to somewhere warm so your humans can get "centered" again.

    2. Me also thinks the humans have winter cabin fever. That is beary serious, framing a little bear while trying to extort another little bear. They definitely need some time in the sun!

    3. You're both right--Jerry has been leaving travel brochures all over the place--hopefully they'll get the hint (but you know seKretaries are not as smart as stuffies).

    4. Humans definitely need more direct intervention that stuffies. Perhaps you could negotiate... a trip = x number of cookies. A trip to the big lake would be 10 cookies. A trip to France would be 50 cookies... what do you think? Of course... Jerry would have to keep his paws off the cookies!

    1. I should, shouldn't I? But I can't decide if I want to be a tour guide or a sleuth! Or perhaps I could combine them... take stuffies on mystery tours! Too bad I don't live in a place like London which has tonnes of mysteries!

    2. You need to start a Case Book Sanday!

  3. Lots of twists and turns in this mystery. I liked your idea Sandy about a little bear being the "puppet master" secretly controlling the humans actions and getting a humans fingerprints etc. on the clues.

    1. I still think that might be the case... you know, stuffie thought-control of humans or something. Beary convenient that the human copped to the crime so quickly... Has all the trademark qualities of a Professor Beariarty!

    2. Hehe. Luckily Sherlock Sandy is around to solve all the clues.

    3. Well yes... but it does leave a little bear quite hungry... for soft chocolate chip cookies in fact...
