An Addition to the Garden

Hullo bears and not-a-bears! Today I got an addition for our garden. My favourite hot chocolate shop also sells a bit of coffee and give away the used coffee grounds for free! So I got a big bag of it...

It has some coffee filters in there... but that is OK because they can just go in the compost.

Doesn't that look good? It also smells beary good - Mama says her truck is going to smell like coffee for days. Which is not a bad thing...

First we put some in the compost bin - because it is good in there. We put in the coffee filters and then some coffee beans that ended up in the bag as well. Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen - so good for compost but don't add too too much.

Then we added some to the garden, spread it on top and then mix it in gently. It has the added benefit that cats don't like the smell of it, which is beary good.

If you look close, you can still see a few coffee beans in there.

I was wondering... does anyone out there have tips for keeping cats and slugs out of your garden? We put some chicken wire over parts of the garden for the cats... and it is good to know they don't like the smell of coffee (or citrus peels apparently). And we have eggshells around sensitive things to keep slugs away... any other ideas?

  1. Mmm that must smell good! I have an idea for keeping away cats. How about you create a "bearcrow" in the garden? Make it ferocious looking. If you want, Uncle Tibbs can come over and sit there and keep watch. He's beary big so I don't think anyone would want to mess with him.

    1. Oh that's an idea!! But we have birds too that we don't want to scare away - like robins and hummingbirds. Will a bearcrow scare them away??

    2. I will have to try citrus as well, we have cats that think our garden is there litterbox!

How often do you put the coffee grounds in the garden?

    3. Wellll... so far I've only done it once - but the spots I have done it on, the cats are avoiding those areas! Which is good... I have to look up how often to put the grounds on... but I am going to spread it around more. Darn kitties!

  2. What about brining daisy the dog back, that ought to solve the cat problem. All joking aside I would love to find out a good cat repellant myself, they seem to think my garden is a litter box.

    1. Oh that's an idea but she's not really a cat-chaser. There are three Jack Russells behind us and they don't seem to act as neighbourhood deterrent either. I've heard cats don't like citrus peels either...

  3. I heard somewhere that cats and dogs don't like cayenne pepper or hot sauce. It can't hurt to try it.

    1. Well, that's an option too.... does it hurt the plants at all?
