Roasting chestnuts by an open fire?

Sandy came across a weird tree here at Gramma's... this one is called a Horse Chestnut!
The leaves look beary different from anything back home...
And up in the leaves there are some round green things which, with a bit of help, Sandy pulls to the ground.
Hmm... they just seem to be just round green things. They would be great for throwing practice... like getting ready for a snowball fight!! But Mama says they are not just green round things...
All you have to do is step on them a bit and the green husk splits open and reveals... horse chestnuts!! This one has twins!
And this one just had one in it. They are beary pretty... shiny with a rich brown finish. Sandy wants to know if you can roast these by an open fire and eat them... but Mama thinks not... they aren't "real" chestnuts!
But if you put them all together... they sort of end up looking like... well... like moose poop!! Sandy could play a few tricks with these!

  2. If you don't want to roast and eat them Sandy, we're not so fond of them, they do look nice on the table when there is a bowl full of them.

  3. They work pretty good to keep spiders away if you put them around, say, in your basement where you may find spiders!

  4. @Beanie - Well... they are too big to be deer poop or rabbit poop!

@Jerry & Ben - very true - they make a nice addition to a fall basket - along with some bright red maple leaves!

@Lori - Spiders?? There are spiders in basements?? Ewww!!!

  5. Well since red maple leaves are symbols of Canada, Ben has started to call them Sandy leaves. hehe
