Learning Patience

Sandy Bear has been seeing so many flowers in the last few days! Strangely enough, they all seem to be yellow - dandelions, buttercups, star asters, (and don' forget the skunk cabbage)... Sandy's beginning to wonder if Canada only has yellow flowers! Yes, there are red tulips... but tulips come from Holland... and he knows that his friend Hammie Hamster in Holland has different coloured flowers. But what about Canada? Well, today, Sandy discovered white flowers... and on a shrub, high off the ground. Now that is different!
After a bit of a scramble, Sandy got a closer look at these flowers... and they are very pretty... but why are there flowers on bushes?
Well... according to Sandy's mama... these flowers will make... berries! Berries? As in Bear-ies? Nope, not bear fans... or even little bears... these are fruit berries, and they are very, very yummy. Very yummy... They are called "Saskatoon Berries" in Canada. Elsewhere they are called serviceberries or shadberries or juneberries... The berries can be made into pies or jellies or syrups or liqueurs or... practically anything. Sandy would love to taste some... right now... but is told he'll have to wait until "Summer". Maybe his friends can tell him if berry pie is worth the wait?

  2. Hi Sandy, Jerry has been working hard in the flower garden too, but we don't have those kind of flowers. Can you make jam with those berries? Papa grows raspberries and he make jam that we put on our toast, it's beary good!

    1. Hi Ben,

Mama says S'skatoon berries make very good jelly... they have big seeds so aren't great for jam. Mama tells me that raspberries are yummy... I am jealous!

I was helping in the garden today too! I had to be very, very careful though, as there was a lot of dirt and a lot of water... Mama made me watch from the sidelines, but I was able to say "put that there and put that over there"... I could be a film director some day maybe!

    1. Thanks Bob... should I call you Sir Bob? My mama says that's what esq. means... I've never met a "Sir" before! Have you met the Queen (or seen her from afar)?

My mama planted some mint in our front garden this morning... it smells very nice. I'll look for you video...

  4. Luckily Sandy you have boots on to work in the garden. Jerry sometimes gets dirt on his paws, an Papa as to give him a bath, but that's ok, because there are bubbles and a yellow rubber duck to play with!

We have heard of S'skatoon berries, but I don't think ever eaten them. When Ben helps make raspberry jam, he gets rid of half of the seeds, cause the jam would have TOO many seeds it in!

  5. Papa gives you a bath??!! Don't you shrink in the water? I read somewhere that wool shrinks in water... and I think the same thing would happen to my fur, because it feels even nicer than wool. Mama just rolls her eyes when I tell her this...

Mama tells me that blackberries make excellent jam too... but that some of the seeds need to be strained out too. Do you have blackberries down there?

  6. Hello,
Thank you for showing us the flowers! We always like to see what kind of plants and flowers and animals our blogfriends in other countries see when they go outside :-)!
